In the modern energy industry, networks based on the Smart Grid concept are increasingly developing. These are smart energy networks that allow to solve two main problems in the power industry - to reduce losses and maintain a balance between the produced and consumed electricity in real time (energy does not have properties stored or accumulated). One of the elements of a smart energy network is a smart electricity meter that can detect and predict electricity consumption in homes and in manufacturing and deliver information for real-time analysis over the wireless channel. This information is then used to manage the generating capacity.

The problem or task

The task was to develop an intelligent electricity meter - a system for recording the values ​​of voltage, current, power and energy in a three-phase electric network 0,4 kV. It was necessary to transfer the measurement results over the ZigBee and GPRS wireless channels. Information about the operation of the counter received and processed the hub.


To solve the problem, a Smart Meter was developed, which allows to register instantaneous values ​​of voltage and current, to calculate the power and energy in the electrical network. The hardware platform for the smart meter was the NI SOM platform installed on the mezzanine board. The modules of data transmission over wireless channels ZigBee and GSM / GPRS were connected to the mezzanine board. Software developed in the LabVIEW programming environment using LabVIEW FPGA and LabVIEW Real-Time carried out continuous recording of power and energy and stored values ​​in memory. The data on the measured values ​​of power and energy for a specified period of time were transmitted for analysis to a remote server using the ZigBee protocol.
